Stop Being a "Walking PR Channel": The True Definition of a Fan

May 5, 2026 3 min read 2 views

We have entered an era where being a "fan" has become a full-time, unpaid job. If you spend your evenings arguing on social media about who is the "GOAT," tracking the flight paths of athletes, or memorizing the stats of a superstar, you have fallen into the PR Channel Trap.

Think about it: You are using your voice, your time, and your emotional energy to build someone else's brand. You are promoting their charisma, their upcoming events, and their legacy. Meanwhile, your own "brand"—your skills, your health, and your bank account—is being neglected.

Admire the Qualities, Not the Position

Most people admire the position of a superstar—the fame, the money, and the trophies. But a high-value fan admires the qualities that got them there.

The PR Fan: Talks about how many runs Virat Kohli scored.

The High-Value Fan: Studies Kohli’s discipline, his diet, and his mental toughness to apply those same traits to their own career.

If you claim to be a fan of someone like Shah Rukh Khan, don't just watch his movies. Admire how he maintains his work ethic and charisma even after decades of success. Ask yourself: "How can I install that level of work ethic into my own life?"

Installing Greatness

The best way to respect an idol is to become like them in character, not just a spectator of their wins.

Audit your idols: List the top 3 people you follow.

Extract the traits: What is the specific "hard work" or "skill" they possess?

The Installation: Instead of talking about them today, spend that hour practicing one of their traits in your own field.

The Stake on the Table

The reason we get addicted to watching others win is that it gives us a "cheap" dopamine hit without any risk. This is Outbound Entertainment. You are watching a match where you have nothing to lose and nothing to gain.

If you want to grow, you need to shift toward Inbound Entertainment.

Instead of watching a 3-hour cricket match, go to the park and play for an hour.

Instead of watching a movie about a hero, spend time building a project that makes you the hero of your own story.

When you are the participant, you get the dopamine, but you also get the physical fitness and the mental growth. You finally have a "stake on the table."

Reclaim Your Authority

You hold the authority to improve your life. Every time you mindlessly consume, you are handing that authority over to a media organization that views you as a decimal point in their ratings.

Stop being a spectator. Stop being a PR agent. Start being the person who others might one day admire for their own hard work.

Do you find yourself defending a celebrity or team as if they were family? If you redirected all the energy you spend on fandom into a personal skill for just one month, what could you achieve?
